Healthcare architecture is the effort to design facilities that not only provide for those who are unwell, but to promote greater health and well-being within its confines. As technology and new practices develop, designers must respect the professional mandate to “first, do no harm” while incorporating the delivery of healthcare within an environment that enhances patient comfort and dignity and promotes safety and medical support to the staff, physicians and visitors of the facility. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the designer to create a physical environment that will enable the administration of care in the most appropriate and life-enhancing manner possible.
