CDM – Los Angeles Opens Office Featuring LEED Amenities

Marina del Rey, CA – The Los Angeles office of Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc. (CDM), a consulting, engineering, construction and operations firm specializing in water, environmental, transportation and facilities projects, has officially opened its doors in downtown Los Angeles on the fourth floor of the historic Pacific Center, featuring LEED amenities, currently pending official LEED certification.  In addition to the invited guests at the official Open House held on Tuesday, April 18th, was Thomas J. Furman, Chairman and CEO of CDM, and numerous employees of CDM from throughout California and across the country.

Since 1947, CDM has been a national leader in the engineering practice of water supply and water pollution control, while expanding their expertise to the fields of hazardous waste management, construction and operations.  With their commitment to the preservation and remediation of natural resources, the decision to renovate the new offices in Los Angeles applying LEED C-I (Commercial Interiors) certification standards was a natural outgrowth of the company’s principles.

With the cooperation of the building’s management and the active contributions of the building engineer, the interior of the suite was demolished to the studs and built out with an emphasis on materials and systems that would be environmentally friendly as well as prolonging the lifecycle of the office.  This was accomplished with a comprehensive approach; through the use of low-emitting paints and materials for furniture and carpeting; increased zones for HVAC to allow more personal control; reduced lighting power density and increased use of individual task lighting; and Energy-Star rated computers and appliances to reduce energy consumption.  In addition to their commitment to recycling paper, corrugated cardboard, metals, glass and plastics, this office was able to incorporate their mission statement into their everyday office environment.

As the LEED commissioning agents to this project, Gotama Building Engineers was invited to attend the Open House and view the finished offices.  “This was a great opportunity to work with CDM because they were so committed to the LEED goals of the project,” stated Eric Soladay, P.E.   “A lot can be accomplished when the client is willing to pursue ideas and solutions that will not only conserve energy and resources but also create a more people-friendly work environment.”
